Greece Trains Navy Officers to Build Drone Swarms With MIT

Greece is building a domestic ecosystem for naval drone warfare, training 30 military and defense industry personnel at the Hellenic Naval Academy in a program developed with MIT.

The program, called TRITON Labs, is a joint initiative between the Hellenic-American Education Foundation (ELCAK), MIT Open Learning, and StartSmart South Eastern Europe, the only MIT-affiliated startup accelerator in Greece. It runs as two intensive two-week modules covering electromechanical robotics design and maritime autonomy, sensors, and communications, both drawn directly from MIT coursework.

Greece is targeting the technology layer, not the manufacturing one.

The Greek Defense Ministry framed the program as preparing the Hellenic Navy for 21st-century challenges, specifically the ability to operate combinations of autonomous surface and underwater vessels. Sources familiar with the program told Naftempiriki the goal is not one-off training but systematic, deep expertise, building a lasting national capability.

The focus is not on building the drone hulls themselves. Instead, Greece wants to master the electronics integration, software, and development know-how needed to deploy and counter swarms of naval drones, both surface and submarine. That distinction matters: it means Greece is targeting the technology layer, not the manufacturing one.

Participants include officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, as well as Coast Guard personnel and representatives from Greek defense and technology companies. On completion, state-of-the-art equipment used during the program will be donated to the Naval Academy to sustain the capability permanently.

MIT Open Learning Universal AI Program licenses are also being secured for Greek Armed Forces personnel and military academy students through the same initiative, expanding AI skills training across the force at scale.

The program is being operationally supported by StartSmart SEE, formerly MIT Enterprise Forum Greece, which MIT Open Learning has designated as its sole authorized partner for implementing the Triton Maritime Robotics Summer School in Greece.
