Musk: Nolan is “Stomping on Homer’s Grave” With Odyssey Casting

Elon Musk has gone after Christopher Nolan over the casting choices in his upcoming film "The Odyssey," accusing the director of picking Lupita Nyong'o to play Helen of Troy simply because "he wants awards."

Musk reposted content on X mocking actor Elliot Page's masculinity, adding his agreement that Nolan is "stomping on Homer's grave" with the film's casting decisions. Page, a Canadian actor who came out as transgender and non-binary in 2020, is also part of the production.

The controversy escalated after a May 12 Time magazine piece confirmed that Nyong'o will play not one but two roles in the film. The Oscar-winning actress is set to portray Helen of Troy, described in Greek mythology as the most beautiful woman in the world, and her sister Clytemnestra, who is married to Agamemnon.

Conservative commentator Matt Walsh piled on, writing on X that no one actually believes Nyong'o is "the most beautiful woman in the world," and claiming Nolan only cast her because he feared being called racist if he gave the role to a white actress. Walsh called Nolan "technically talented but cowardly."

This is not the first time Musk has criticized the film's casting. Back in February, when Nyong'o's role was still just a rumor, he agreed with a user who called it "an insult to Homer," arguing the ancient Greek poet described Helen as fair-skinned and blonde, the face that launched a thousand ships. Musk wrote at the time that "Chris Nolan has lost his integrity."

"The Odyssey" is set to open in American theaters on July 17.
