Greece Fire Tops 100,000 Stremma, Now a Megafire

A wildfire burning across Boeotia and Attica has surpassed 100,000 stremma of burned land, with fire meteorologist Thodoris Giannaros now calling it almost certain to be classified as a "megafire," a term reserved for fires of extreme scale.

Giannaros posted an analysis of heat signatures recorded through the early hours of Sunday, August 2, confirming the fire's staggering reach. The blaze originated in the Agios Vasileios area of Boeotia before spreading into Attica.

"Almost certain to be classified as a megafire" — fire meteorologist Thodoris Giannaros

The term "megafire" is applied to blazes of exceptional size and intensity. For context, 100,000 stremma equals roughly 25,000 acres, making this one of the most destructive fires Greece has seen in years.

Firefighting crews are battling conditions that have allowed the fire to grow to this scale. No casualty figures were included in the latest update from Giannaros, but the physical destruction across two regions points to a disaster of serious proportions.
