CNN Türk: US Permanent Base Planned for Alexandroupolis
Turkish media is floating scenarios about a permanent American military base in Alexandroupolis, with CNN Türk tying the claims to the recent visit of new US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.
According to a CNN Türk television report, Guilfoyle made a "critical meeting" with Greek authorities during her first visit to Alexandroupolis a few days ago, and the contents of that meeting were allegedly not disclosed to the Greek press. The Turkish network claims that a permanent US military installation comparable to the Souda Bay base in Crete was discussed at that meeting.
CNN Türk claims Guilfoyle conducted an on-site inspection of plots to assess locations for a permanent American and NATO presence.
CNN Türk also reported that the two sides may have discussed transferring part of the American forces currently stationed at Souda to Alexandroupolis. The network further claims that Guilfoyle conducted an on-site inspection of various plots and zones across the wider region to assess possible locations for a permanent American and NATO presence.
Crucially, CNN Türk presented all of these claims without citing any official statements or confirmation from either American or Greek authorities. As of now, no official announcement has been made by either government confirming any plans for a new permanent US base in Alexandroupolis.
Turkish media has increasingly focused on Alexandroupolis in recent years, driven by the expanded American and NATO presence in the area and the port's strategic role in transporting military equipment into Eastern Europe. The port has become one of the most active transit points for NATO logistics since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
