Woman Arrested After Running Over Sleeping Dog in Corfu
A 44-year-old woman in Corfu has been sent to prosecutors after security camera footage showed her running over a dog that was sleeping in the road. The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning in the village of Avliotes, in northern Corfu.
Security footage captured the driver slowing down as she approached the animal, then continuing forward and driving over it. The dog died from its injuries. The video circulated widely and prompted a wave of complaints to local police.
"I never intended to hit the animal" — the driver told authorities
Officers from the Northern Corfu Police Department identified and arrested the woman following those complaints. According to SKAI, the driver told authorities she never intended to hit the animal.
Police announced that a case file has been opened against her for violating animal welfare legislation. A mandatory administrative fine has also been confirmed as part of the preliminary investigation.
The case has drawn significant attention across Greece, with many calling for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws. Greece has faced repeated criticism over the treatment of stray animals, and incidents captured on video tend to generate strong public reaction.
