Turkey Sends Armed F-16s Into Greek Airspace 10 Times in One Day

Turkey dramatically escalated its provocations in the Aegean on Friday, sending armed F-16 fighter jets into Greek airspace 10 times in a single day, with two of those violations developing into full aerial engagements with Greek forces.

The Turkish jets flew in formations of three pairs, operating across the northeastern, central, and southeastern Aegean simultaneously. That kind of coordinated, multi-zone formation flying signals a deliberate escalation, not a navigation error or isolated incident.

Armed aircraft engaging in simulated combat maneuvers inside another country's airspace is a serious escalation by any measure.

In total, nine Turkish aircraft were involved, including three drones and six F-16s, four of which were armed. Beyond the 10 airspace violations, the aircraft also committed 10 separate violations of the Athens FIR, the internationally recognized flight information region that Turkey is required to respect under international aviation rules.

Greek forces intercepted and engaged the intruding jets in two of the encounters, known as "dogfight-style" mock engagements where pilots maneuver against each other at close range. These are not passive flyovers. Armed aircraft engaging in simulated combat maneuvers inside another country's airspace is a serious escalation by any measure.

Greek authorities have documented the incidents, according to Skai, which reported the full details of Friday's activity. The scale and coordination of the operation, nine aircraft across three regions in a single day, marks one of the more aggressive single-day provocations Turkey has carried out in the Aegean in recent memory.
