The Only Byzantine Church in Istanbul That Was Never Converted to a Mosque
Every Byzantine church in Istanbul was converted to a mosque after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Every one except for a small church in the Fener district that has rung its bells without interruption for over 740 years.
The church is known as Panagia ton Mongolion, or Panagia Mouhliotissa, and its survival traces back to a single woman: Maria Palaiologina, the illegitimate daughter of Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII. In 1280 she founded the church, and the protections she secured during her lifetime proved strong enough to outlast empires.
She built a place of worship in foreign territory and offered shelter to merchants, prisoners, and the persecuted.
Maria's story is extraordinary on its own. At just 17, her father sent her east as a diplomatic bride to Abaga Khan, ruler of the Mongol Ilkhanate, as part of a strategic alliance. She spent roughly fifteen years at the Mongol court, where she earned enough influence and trust to become the protector of Christians in the region and was known as "Despina Khatun." She built a place of worship in foreign territory and offered shelter to merchants, prisoners, and the persecuted.
When Abaga Khan died and her position weakened, she returned to Constantinople a different woman. The Palaiologos court had little use for her anymore. Rather than re-enter the political arena, she withdrew, founded her monastery, and later took monastic vows under the name Melani.
The monastery she founded carried legal protections from both her Byzantine and Mongol connections, and those protections created a rare kind of immunity. Even after 1453, when Mehmed II's conquest reshaped every institution in the city, this single church kept its doors open. It has held liturgies every week since.
The church still stands in the Fener neighborhood of Istanbul today, the only Byzantine church in the city that has functioned continuously as an Orthodox place of worship from its founding to the present day. Maria left behind no armies or imperial decrees, only a building that outlasted everything around it.
