The Greek Woman Who Raised the Flag Alone on a Tiny Island Every Day for Decades

For nearly four decades, Despoina Achladiotis lived alone on the tiny rocky islet of Ro in the Dodecanese, raising the Greek flag every single morning and lowering it every evening, refusing to let the island's Greek identity go uncontested.

Born in 1890 on Kastellorizo, Achladiotis moved to Ro with her husband in the 1930s and stayed even after he died, living without electricity, running water, or regular contact with the mainland. She became known as the "Kyra of Ro," roughly translated as the "Lady of Ro," a title that captured both her solitude and her stubborn defiance. Her daily flag-raising became a political act as much as a personal ritual, given the island's exposed position near the Turkish coast.

Ro sits just a few kilometers from Turkey and was among the Dodecanese islands returned to Greece in 1947 after decades of Italian occupation. Its location made it strategically sensitive, and Achladiotis was keenly aware of that. She reportedly turned down offers to leave the island, telling Greek authorities and journalists that someone had to be there.

The Greek Navy supplied her periodically by boat, and she became a celebrated national figure, visited by politicians and journalists who made the difficult trip to the island. She died on Ro in 1982 at around 92 years old, and was buried there. A Greek flag continues to fly on the island to this day.

Her story remains one of the most striking examples of individual devotion to Greek sovereignty in the modern era, particularly in the Dodecanese, a region whose Greek identity was fought over for generations.
