Stoxx CEO to Unlock $1B for Greek Markets on Sept. 21

On September 21, a single decision by one man is expected to bring roughly 1 billion euros into Greek financial markets. Axel Lomholt, the Danish-born CEO of Stoxx Ltd, will formally reclassify Greek stocks into the Developed Markets category of the major Stoxx indices that day, triggering a wave of capital inflows analysts have been watching closely.

Lomholt, who was born in Denmark in the early 1970s, built his career in London after leaving his home country at a young age. He studied finance at Bayes Business School and earned a postgraduate degree from the University of Reading before entering the industry in 1997 as a risk manager at HSBC Global Asset Management. From there he moved through Gulf International Bank and BlackRock, where he first got deep into the world of ETFs and benchmark indices.

The Stoxx inclusion is seen as the bigger driver of fresh capital than the parallel MSCI reclassification.

His biggest career leap came at Vanguard, where he relocated to Hong Kong to serve as Head of Product and Strategy for all of Asia. That track record landed him the top job at Stoxx Ltd in November 2021. Stoxx Ltd is a subsidiary of the ISS Stoxx Group, which is controlled by Germany's Deutsche Borse, and is considered Europe's leading provider of stock market indices.

Many analysts consider Lomholt's move even more consequential than the parallel reclassification by MSCI, which is also scheduled for the same date. While both are significant upgrades for Greece, the Stoxx inclusion is seen as the bigger driver of fresh capital. The reclassification was based on strict criteria and automated processes, but required Lomholt's sign-off to become reality.

During his five years leading Stoxx, Lomholt has pushed hard on combining finance with technology, including a recent 23 million euro acquisition of Singapore-based Scientific Beta. He believes the next phase of markets demands flexibility and specialized tools built around real innovation.
