Kythnos Has No Pediatrician. Families Airlifted to Athens for Emergencies

The island of Kythnos has no permanent pediatrician, leaving families to manage children's medical needs without reliable specialist care. The island's Regional Health Clinic has no doctor of that specialty on staff, and serious cases are transferred all the way to Attica on the mainland.

Day-to-day coverage is patched together through occasional visits from private pediatricians, which means routine care is inconsistent and emergency situations carry real risk. Parents on the island have described the anxiety of raising children with no guaranteed specialist nearby.

Serious cases are transferred all the way to Attica on the mainland.

To attract a permanent hire, the Municipality of Kythnos is now offering a monthly incentive bonus of 1,000 euros on top of standard pay. The municipality is hoping the financial package will be enough to convince a pediatrician to relocate to the island full-time.

The situation on Kythnos reflects a wider problem across Greece's smaller islands, where geographic isolation makes it difficult to staff public health facilities with specialists. Recruiting and retaining doctors in remote communities has been an ongoing challenge for the country's national health system.

Whether the bonus will be enough to fill the vacancy remains to be seen. Until a permanent appointment is made, families on Kythnos will continue relying on irregular private visits and mainland transfers when their children need specialist attention.
