Greek Riot Police Deploy in Syros Over Israeli Cruise Ship Protest

Riot police and traffic bans hit the island of Syros today as Greek authorities braced for protests against the Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris, which docked at the port of Ermoupolis at 8 a.m. with a scheduled departure at 5 p.m.

The Syros Port Authority coordinated with police after the island's Anti-War Initiative called for demonstrations near the harbor at arrival and in Miaouli Square at noon. Authorities announced temporary traffic restrictions across the port's land zone, citing urgent public safety reasons.

"Any threat to public order comes not from the peaceful citizens of Syros" — Anti-War Initiative

Police imposed movement restrictions from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Protesters gathering at Miaouli Square were confined to that space and barred from marching through most of Ermoupolis city center. Authorities justified the ban by saying the demonstrations would "disproportionately disrupt the socioeconomic life" of the area and block access to hospitals and essential services.

The measures divided residents, local organizations, and community groups on the island. The Anti-War Initiative pushed back sharply, stating that any threat to public order comes not from the peaceful citizens of Syros, but from "the Israeli army and its supporters." The group called on Greek authorities to prevent cruise passengers from provoking or attacking protesters, as they claim has happened elsewhere in Greece, and demanded that officials not become "complicit in the genocide in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territories."

The Crown Iris has been a flashpoint at multiple Greek ports in recent months, with anti-war groups consistently organizing against its visits. Today's police response in Syros was one of the more heavily coordinated deployments seen so far.
