Greece Gets Its First Snow of the Season in Mid-October

Snow arrived in northern Greece on Friday afternoon, weeks before the ski season is set to begin. Snowflakes fell at Kotyli in Kastoria at around 1,200 metres above sea level, and in Samarina, Grevena, one of Greece's highest mountain villages, sitting at roughly 1,450 metres.

At the Vasilitsa ski resort in Grevena, snowfall was light but visible on the peaks and upper slopes around the resort facilities. According to ERT, snow was also reported at the Anilio ski resort near Metsovo and at the Parnassos ski resort further south.

The October timing puts this snowfall well ahead of the typical start to mountain winter conditions in northern Greece.

Temperatures across the Kastoria region ranged from 1°C to 11°C on Friday, confirming a sharp early-season drop. The October timing puts this snowfall well ahead of the typical start to mountain winter conditions in northern Greece.

Whether more snow follows at higher altitudes in the coming days will depend on how the weather pattern develops over the weekend and into next week.
