Greece Builds Permanent Drone Base on Rhodes

Greece is establishing a permanent drone base on Rhodes, replacing the temporary platforms that have limited drone operations on the island until now. The Defense Ministry confirmed the move is part of a broader push to expand Greece's unmanned aerial capabilities across the region.

Greek-made drones are not yet capable of fully meeting the needs of the armed forces, according to the ministry, meaning imports will continue while domestic production catches up. Defense Minister Nikos Dendias announced that a manufacturing plant is being built near Athens to produce drones based on Greek technology, signaling a long-term bet on domestic defense industry growth.

Rhodes sits at the southeastern edge of the Aegean, close to Turkish waters and within range of Cyprus.

Greek defense companies showcased their developing drone and counter-drone systems during a military exercise held this summer, with the technology tested under conditions designed to reflect real operational requirements. The Rhodes base fits into that larger picture, giving the armed forces a proper, permanent infrastructure to operate unmanned systems from one of the Aegean's most strategically positioned islands.

Rhodes sits at the southeastern edge of the Aegean, close to Turkish waters and within range of Cyprus. A permanent drone facility there significantly extends Greece's surveillance and response reach in one of the most contested stretches of the Eastern Mediterranean.

The broader program combines the new base, domestic manufacturing investment, and continued foreign procurement to close the capability gap as quickly as possible. Greece has been accelerating defense spending and modernization since 2020, and the Rhodes facility represents one of the more concrete steps in that effort.
