Cyprus and Turkey: Weekly Talks Set as UN Pushes for Results

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman will meet on September 2, with officials confirming the two sides have agreed to hold weekly sessions on the divided island's future.

The talks come as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has pushed for the next five-party Cyprus conference to produce concrete results, not just goodwill gestures. The UN is currently cataloguing areas of agreement reached in previous negotiating rounds to use as a foundation for the next round.

Every previous round of Cyprus talks has ultimately stalled on Ankara's refusal to budge on core sovereignty questions.

Guterres' personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, is also expected to visit Cyprus in early September, signaling the UN is applying direct pressure to keep momentum going. The back-to-back visits suggest the UN sees this window as a genuine opening rather than a procedural exercise.

Officials in Nicosia were careful to temper expectations, saying that while leader-level progress is necessary, Turkey's stance remains the decisive factor in whether any real settlement can be reached. That caveat is significant. Every previous round of Cyprus talks has ultimately stalled on Ankara's refusal to budge on core sovereignty questions, and nothing in Turkey's current posture suggests that has changed.

The weekly meeting format is new and more intensive than past contact schedules, but the fundamental gap between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey's position on reunification has not narrowed. Christodoulides enters these talks backed by Nicosia's insistence that a solution must respect EU law and the island's sovereignty, while Erhurman's room to maneuver depends largely on what Ankara permits.
