Millions Watched Coronation Street Validate Turkey’s Cyprus Occupation

Britain's ITV has issued a formal apology to the Cypriot community after its long-running soap opera Coronation Street referred to a "Turkish side" and a "Greek side" of Cyprus, language that implies a legitimacy to Turkey's occupation that the Republic of Cyprus rejects outright.

The apology came after the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom filed a formal complaint. ITV Studios acknowledged the language used was inaccurate and caused distress to the Cypriot community.

ITV said the script was intended to reflect casual conversation from characters with little to no knowledge of the facts on the ground.

In its statement, ITV said the script was intended to reflect casual conversation from characters Steve, Tim, and Ben, who were written as having little to no knowledge of the facts on the ground. The network stressed the wording was never meant to suggest an equivalence between the legitimate Republic of Cyprus and territory claimed unilaterally by Turkey.

ITV also committed to passing the community's concerns to Coronation Street's editorial team and promised to be more careful on these issues going forward, avoiding similar inaccuracies in the future.

The complaint highlights a long-standing frustration among Cypriots worldwide, where careless media language can unintentionally normalize Turkey's 1974 military occupation of the island's north as a recognized political reality rather than an illegal seizure of sovereign territory.

Coronation Street is one of Britain's most watched programs, with audiences in the millions, making the framing of Cyprus in its script far from a trivial matter for the Cypriot diaspora in the UK.
