Turkish Drones Buzz Anti-Occupation Event in Cyprus

Turkish drones launched from occupied Cyprus flew over an anti-occupation ceremony in Deryneia on Saturday night, in what Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides called an unprecedented provocation.

The drones took off from the occupied north and crossed into the buffer zone near the event organized by the Famagusta Municipality, potentially violating the existing status quo of the UN-monitored neutral zone. Cypriot authorities are reviewing audio-visual footage of the incident and are expected to file formal complaints with the relevant bodies.

"Those who support the island's permanent partition would try to create obstacles as diplomacy gains momentum." — Christodoulides

Christodoulides said it was the first time he had witnessed this kind of violation at the annual event, having attended it for years as government spokesman and foreign minister. He also noted that Turkish military marches were played loudly at the start of the ceremony, an apparent attempt to disrupt the proceedings alongside the drone flights.

The president stopped short of identifying who gave the order, but said the Turkish occupation forces likely "wanted to send a message." He condemned the actions without qualification, stating there is no justification for them under any circumstances.

Christodoulides connected the timing to ongoing efforts toward a Cyprus settlement, suggesting that those who support the island's permanent partition would try to create obstacles as diplomacy gains momentum. He added that Cyprus remains fully committed to pushing for a positive outcome in international negotiations.

Authorities are evaluating all available evidence, including video, and formal diplomatic steps are expected to follow.
