Greece’s Military Gets Its First Female Spokesperson

Greece's armed forces have appointed their first female spokesperson. Lieutenant Colonel Maria Kioiliou officially took over as press spokesperson for the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) on Thursday, in a ceremony held at the Navy General Staff headquarters in Athens.

The handover took place in the presence of GEETHA Chief of Staff General Dimitrios Choupis, who praised Kioiliou directly during the event. Choupis noted that she had "risen with success in a male-dominated environment," commending her performance and record.

Kioiliou replaces Colonel Spyros Aslanis, who held the post for three years. General Choupis thanked Aslanis for his service, presented him with commemorative gifts, and also expressed gratitude to accredited journalists for their cooperation throughout his tenure.

The appointment marks a first in the history of the Greek military's senior communications role.
